Blogpost1: Soulmate: Between Destiny and Choice

In this world, we believe that all of us have soulmates but we don’t know who he/she is. How do we define Soulmate anyway?  A soulmate is the man or woman you are compatible with in disposition, point of view or sensitivity. All of us have ideal types with the opposite sex. When you see a person that catches your attention, you instantly feel that unexplainable connection to him/her. Little do we also know, we've already bumped with our soulmates in the past; or maybe we’ve already seen them in our dreams or maybe they’re just sitting beside us without us knowing.

Only time can tell if it’s about time to see, reunite and settle with our soulmates who could possibly justify stuff like knees-turn-into-jellies, butterflies in the stomach and worse, the power of the eyes to invisibly extract out other people’s strength. It is normal that along the powerful name of love, another pair of intricacies would arise: destiny and choice. It is more likely that in between the man's will and what is fated, they would meet halfway in the center as a manifestation of confusedness.

To quote The Symposium by Philosopher Plato about soulmates, “In Greek mythology, humans were originally created with 4 arms, 4 legs and a head with 2 faces. Fearing their power, Zeus split them into two separate parts, condemning them to spend their lives in search for other halves.” There were three genders: the man, the woman and the androgynous which is having the characteristics or nature of both male and female. The men were the children of the sun, the women were the children of the earth and the androgynous were children of the moon. They said that human is stronger rather than gods, so the gods planned to destroy the humans but they failed. Zeus decided to revenge by splitting human in half as a punishment for humanity’s pride and doubling the number of humans who would praise the gods. Each human would forever long for their half soul; you would find your half sooner or later and you can understand each other without talking; you feel unified and together. That’s one of the mythologies of soul mate.

When I’m searching for a movie about soulmates, I saw a movie entitled Just Like Heaven directed by Mark Waters. It instantly caught my attention. It is a story of a woman named Elizabeth who had a car accident and a man named David who lost his wife. Elizabeth didn't believe that she’s already dead and became a spirit so she went to David’s apartment. David was shocked because he can see and hear Elizabeth, and that became the start of them being always together even though they’re not compatible with each other. After a long period of time that they have been together, they found themselves attracted to one another. David also helped Elizabeth in searching for her body which they eventually found in a hospital. Elizabeth's body was in coma and only life support was sustaining her life, even if they know that she’ll also die soon. David steals Elizabeth’s body in the hospital and went to his friend JJ to help him and David discovered that JJ was the ex-boyfriend of Elizabeth and JJ was the one who set the blind date between David and Elizabeth just before the accident happened. That’s why David can see her because they were really meant to meet. When Elizabeth’s tube was accidentally removed and she’s dying, David got distracted and did the CPR and surprisingly her heartbeat returns and awakens from the coma. However, Elizabeth doesn't remember anything and David. When Elizabeth has already recovered, she went to her apartment and saw David and found out that David had the spare key of her apartment and she asks him to return her key and when their hands touched, she remembered everything that had happened with David while she’s in coma. And that’s the start of their new life as a normal lover.

The plot in the movie is something that won’t happen in real life but this just goes to show that regardless of time and setting, fictional or for real, love is undeniably boundless. He or she may not be your ideal partner at the start, but time will play an important role in writing the story, that eventually will have a happy ending.

Another movie that I found is from the famed Argentinian director Juan Solanas titled Upside Down One quote from the movie says: "True lovers are one soul that is separated when it's born.” The movie is about the story between two people living in two different planets existing next to each other and both have a dual gravity. The upper world consists of people who are wealthy and prosperous while the people from the lower world are poor. Eden lives in the upper world and Adam in the lower world. They fell in love with each other since they were just little despite the fact that they come from two totally different worlds. Adam did everything to be together with Eden, he did research and experimented to have an anti-gravity product. And after so many years of researching, he was able to find a solution to anti-gravity. Despite the years and challenges, they reunited and pursued their love for each other.

When you've already fallen in love, you don't care anymore if you’re doing wrong and against the law. What matters the most now is you are with the one you love and no matter what happens, nothing can set you apart especially if you are tied by choice and destiny.

It doesn't matter if the movie is factual or a work of fiction as long as we can relate to the story itself, more so if the movie tackles the concept of falling in love, getting hurt and recuperating from the shattered dreams that eventually turn into a happy ending. A lot of people get so attached to movies like these that's why a lot of people also believe in destiny. We are bound to fall for the right person but the factor of time comes into play. Love comes at the right time. “Patience is a virtue” says one of the most famous quotes so don’t be so eager to look for your destiny because it will come to you at the right time. No matter how big the circumstances that will come along the way, time will serve as the foundation to make your relationship stronger and would hopefully last forever.
